In A Peace to End All Peace, David Fromkin reveals how and why the Allies drew lines on an empty map that remade the geography and politics of the Middle East. All of these conflicts-including the hostilities between Arabs and Israelis, and the violent challenges posed by Iraq's competing sects-are rooted in the region's political inheritance: the arrangements, unities, and divisions imposed by the Allies after the First World War. The Middle East has long been a region of rival religions, ideologies, nationalisms, and ambitions. Published with a new afterword from the author-the classic, bestselling account of how the modern Middle East was created

First published between 19 in Swedish, these four books were considered a single work by Moberg, who intended that they be read as documentary novels. Moberg's extensive research in the papers of Swedish emigrants in archival collections, including the Minnesota Historical Society, enabled him to incorporate many details of pioneer life. His consistently faithful depiction of these humble people's lives is a major strength of the Emigrant Novels. Considered one of Sweden's greatest 20th-century writers, Vilhelm Moberg created Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson to portray the joys and tragedies of daily life for early Swedish pioneers in America. From under semiclosed eyes, he studied the activities within the tavern. The smell from the nearby dock was overpowering. At three in the morning the cicadas haunting the evening air were adding to the night’s disturbing symphony. His tattered clothes were soaked with sweat. Slowly, so as not to draw attention to himself, he moved his head, easing muscles now corded with tension as he lay on the stained tabletop pretending he was comatose from drink. He knew who would be coming for the girl. And that was true, but Alex was also here for vengeance. The girl’s father thought he was here simply to repay a debt of honor. It was as if she was desperate to be heard over the din from the drunken men in the tavern below. The sound drifted down the stairs from the rooms above with fear imbued in every note. Her sorrowful cry filled the still night air, unsettling creatures both big and small. In all his twenty-five years, he’d never rescued anyone, let alone a young girl. Alexander Sylvester Bracken, the Marquess of Tavistock, heir to the Duke of Bedford, on no account considered himself a hero. Drawing on science, literature, philosophy and the wisdom of some of the world's leading experts, and her personal journey, Wilson offers a hopeful path forward to the life we love. Sarah Wilson argues that this sense of despair and disconnection is ironically what unites us-that deep down, we are all feeling that same itch for a new way of living. We have retreated, morally and psychologically we are experiencing a crisis of disconnection-from one another, from our true values, from joy, and from life as we feel we are meant to be living it. Many of us are living with the sense that things are not right with the world and are in a state of spiritual PTSD. New York Times bestselling author Sarah Wilson shows you how in this radical spiritual guidebook, the book we need NOW. Wake up and reclaim your one wild and precious life. She has taken her pain and grief about our sick and troubled world and alchemized it into action, advocacy, adventure, poetry, and true love." - ELIZABETH GILBERT "Sarah Wilson is a force of nature - quite literally. I sold out my bastard of a father-trading his secrets for enough money that would ensure my mother would always have what she needs-to protect the man I swore to myself I wouldn’t fall for. (I play feeder to a 4 year old black lab at home – several pages made me pause to compose myself before reading on). As in any survival tale, there are casualties – prepare yourself for some of them to be four-legged. His trademark violence is most definitely there – the humans’ collective demise is brutal and bloody. Garth Ennis puts a fresh spin on the genre, presenting it through the eyes of man’s best friend. This post-apocalyptic quest has become a relatively familiar one to many readers. His pals quickly join him, and set out to answer the question anyone (feeder or canine) would ask at the end of the world as they know it – what now? He cries out “I’m a dog!” in distress, maybe frustration. When his feeder succumbs to the mysterious plague of violence, Charlie is distraught that he no longer has the ability to help. He’s quite content, even proud, of his status as a helper (and the special vest that comes with it). Charlie is a helper – his feeder is blind. All they know is that the feeders are hurting themselves, each other, and even some of the dogs. “I’m a dog! I’m a dog! I’m a dog!” The canine heroes of Rover Red Charliearen’t quite sure what brought about the apocalypse for the humans (or as the dogs refer to them, the feeders). By Mel Lang Comments Off on Review: Rover Red Charlie #1-3 Posted In: Reviews In addition, Rankin is a fun writer, connecting Rebus to contemporary Edinburgh and Scotland and to current events. So he doesn't advance in the force even though he solves all his cases, often brilliantly. Show More too much and smokes too much, has alienated his family, has few friends, lives for his job, takes every chance that presents itself and is, as a result, almost always insubordinate. Rebus is a brilliant creation, and I have to keep reminding myself that he is fictional and not real. Hopefully, Ian Rankin doesn't end this series anytime soon. This series always stays fresh and interesting, leaving me looking forward to the next book in the series. This book is fast-paced and a wonderful mix of politics, intrigue and a cracking mystery. The best part about these books is the realism of the characters and the complex relationship that Rebus and Siobhan have. And in this book, Siobhan is right there with him causing all kinds of trouble on her own while she seeks a serial killer. Rebus is within a year of retirement, but that doesn't stop him from doggedly following leads even after he is threatened and bullied by his superiors and other bigwig political and security people. What is most enjoyable about this book is how we see that Siobhan is getting more and more like her mentor. There are lots of dignitaries and hangers-on all over the Scottish countryside for this week in July which provides Rebus and Siobhan with an unlimited number of suspects. You’ve probably noticed, if you read this column regularly, that I think a lot about the interplay between public and private interests: the ways that personal motivations and decisions affect major public events like wars and scandals, but also the ways in which public, structural constraints affect people’s private decisions, shaping their lives and careers, and sometimes their safety. The only hint I can give is that it doesn't go down the way traditional love triangles go. I can't really explain it with out giving it away. The author makes it where it will just shock the sh*t out of you. "I have to give the author credit – Love Triangle – very different. She is an amazing author who can weave her magic so throughly that you feel as if you are there." - Jessica Bolton, Book Rock Goddess "I love Kailin Gows books and Frost Kisses is no exception. "This is my first novel by Kailin Gow and I promise it won't be the last! She has a wonderful way of capturing the reader from the start and easily transports them to an interesting and fascinating world of Feyland where fairies, pixies and werewolves exist – a beautiful place where magic is normal and necessary, and a place where humans normally cannot survive." - Theresa, Just One More Paragraph Gow will be the next it author." - Amanda Drost, Broken Arrow "Loved this book and am so excited to see what happens in the next one.
